I hope that these 15 recommendations to boost immunity will provide some comfort and guidance during these times when it is all too easy to be overcome by fear and isolation. All of these recommendations are simple ways to prevent illness, be it Covid-19, influenza, or just the common cold.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 18px; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">I recently sent a note to my family with the following suggestions and an offer to make up care packages for them if they wished. Of course, no one can do all of these things, but read through them, see which ones you can incorporate easily into your life, and do a little more research on your own. I\u2019ve provided some great links where you can go for more information and decide what is best for you and your family. Remember, stay safe, keep healthy and remain calm and positive.<\/span><\/p><h2>15 Recommendations for Building Your Immune System<\/h2>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d9536e3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d9536e3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><strong>1. Be in Good Spirits<\/strong><\/h5><p>I believe keeping our spirits high and our hands and minds busy is another way to build immunity. In fact, science has proven this to be true, but I knew it to be true even before science agreed with me\u2014it just made sense.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--expands-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000001a0c0000000000000000_203081\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  title=\"Barak Y. Daily Probiotics<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Daily servings of probiotics in any of your favorite forms: sauerkraut and other fermented foods, yogurt, kefir, miso, etc. If you\u2019ve not <a href=\"http:\/\/aspireiq.go2cloud.org\/aff_c?offer_id=24&amp;aff_id=17818&amp;url=https:\/\/blog.mountainroseherbs.com\/savoring-the-tradition-of-homemade-sauerkraut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener sponsored\">made your own sauerkraut<\/a>&nbsp;[affiliate], this is the time! It\u2019s so fun and easy, and a great food to be eating right now.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>3. Fire Cider<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>I knew there was a reason&nbsp;Fire Cider&nbsp;took center stage in the herbal community: it was meant for these times. It is rich with immune and respiratory supporting herbs: Garlic, Onion, Ginger, Horseradish, Lemon, Turmeric, Cayenne. Add a big handful of fresh Rosemary, Thyme, Oregano and Sage to your batches and you have a super tonic for the times. You can purchase all of these herbs fresh in the produce departments of most natural food and grocery stores.&nbsp;<a style=\"font-size: 18px; background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/scienceandartofherbalism.com\/what-is-fire-cider\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Find my favorite Fire Cider recipe here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5><strong style=\"color: var(--ast-global-color-2); font-size: 1.2em;\">4. Garlic<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Garlic, Garlic, Garlic. 3-4 raw cloves a day, chopped finely or mashed. Can one get too much Garlic? Yes, some people don\u2019t tolerate it well, so go easy on it until you find your dose level. Chop and mash fresh Garlic and let it sit for a few minutes before ingesting as this allows the Garlic to oxidize and activates the antiviral compounds.<\/p>\n<p>Always take raw Garlic with food or it can upset your stomach. It\u2019s great mashed, mixed with plain yogurt and served on rice. This was one of my Mother\u2019s favorite foods, an Armenian specialty. When my mother was living with me, we would eat it almost daily for breakfast. Yum! Remember, in the olden days people would wear cloves of garlic around their neck to keep the plagues at bay. Great for \u2018social distancing\u2019 as well.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c90072e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c90072e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><strong>5. Culinary Herbs<\/strong><\/h5><p>Don\u2019t forget, some of our most medicinal herbs are in the kitchen cupboard: Clove, Rosemary, Sage, Thyme, Oregano. (See <a href=\"https:\/\/scienceandartofherbalism.com\/herbal-recommendations-for-influenza-and-viral-illness-in-the-event-of-a-pandemic\/\">Herbal Recommendations for Influenza and Viral Illness in the Event of a Pandemic by Lora Krall, R.N. <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threespringsfarmvt.com\/single-post\/2020\/01\/29\/Coronavirus-Elderberry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this blog post by community herbalist Helen Ward<\/a>) Well-known herbalist and educator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanherbalistsguild.com\/sites\/americanherbalistsguild.com\/files\/7song-herbalistnotescovid-19.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7Song created this handout<\/a> that contains good information on other herbs to consider.<\/p><h5><strong>6. Seaweed\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5><p>Eat seaweed daily. Aside from the fact that it\u2019s unbelievably nourishing (seaweed contains more minerals and trace minerals than any land vegetable!), seaweed is very immuno-protective and a great aid in building and protecting our immune system. I recommend seaweed from<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ryandrum.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Ryan Drum<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/theseaweedman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Larch Hanson<\/a>.<\/p><h5><strong>7. Up Your Vitamin C and A Intake.<\/strong><\/h5><p>High doses of vitamin C, 1-2,000 mg twice a day as a preventative. Use buffered vitamin C for ease on the stomach, or liposomal C which is more easily absorbed. Take 25,000 IU of vitamin A daily. We aren\u2019t hearing much about supplementing with vitamin A these days, but it was always a favorite supplement I used when people had attacks of asthma, allergies and severe respiratory issues as it helps strengthen and rebuild the cilia or tiny hairs lining the lungs. According to everything I\u2019ve read, COVID-19 attacks the cilia, so this might be a good measure to add as a preventative.<\/p><h5><strong>8. Mushrooms<\/strong><\/h5><p>Daily doses of medicinal mushrooms: there are many choices available to choose from but a few of my favorites are: <a href=\"mailto:forestbay@wcvt.com\">Nancy Scarzello<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mariefrohlich.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marie Frohlich,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healingspiritsherbfarm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Healing Spirits<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.realmushrooms.com\/discount\/Rosemary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener sponsored\">Real Mushrooms<\/a>\u00a0[affiliate].<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d6f76a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3d6f76a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><strong>9. Elderberry<\/strong><\/h5><p>Elderberry, in syrup, capsules or tincture. Especially useful for young children and the elderly (and anyone in between) because they\u2019ll love the flavor. My very favorite is made by Helen Ward at Three Springs Farm of Vermont. Or you can make your own! <a href=\"https:\/\/scienceandartofherbalism.com\/how-to-make-elderberry-syrup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Visit our Elderberry Syrup post for great recipes.<\/a><\/p><h5><strong>10. Astragalus<\/strong><\/h5><p>Astragalus (<i>Astragalus propinquus<\/i>) has been shown to be effective against the H1N1 influenza and is used by herbalists worldwide to support overall immune health. Great to add powdered Astragalus to smoothie and blender drinks, nut butter balls and adaptogen candy, and the herb to soups and stews.<\/p><h5 style=\"font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 21.6px; font-weight: bold;\">11. Echinacea \u00a0<\/span><\/h5><p style=\"font-size: 18px; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Echinacea (<\/span><i>Echinacea purpurea <\/i><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">or <\/span><i>E. angustifolia<\/i>): take this old friend each time you leave the house and each time you return. It is one of our most renowned immune enhancers and has been known to be effective against various types of influenza. If you can get the whole plant Echinacea (root, flower, stem, and seeds), even better.<\/p><h5 style=\"font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 21.6px; font-weight: bold;\">12. Sweet Annie<\/span><\/h5><p style=\"font-size: 18px; font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Sweet Annie (<\/span><i>Artemisia Annua<\/i>): There are some remarkable studies about the effectiveness of Sweet Annie as an effective agent against Coronavirus. I think this is an important herb to have on hand. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpi.edu\/news\/early-research-finds-extracts-sweet-wormwood-plant-can-inhibit-covid-19-virus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read more here.<\/a><\/p><h5 style=\"font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 21.6px; font-weight: bold;\">13. Japanese Knotweed<\/span><\/h5><p style=\"font-size: 18px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re not hearing much about Japanese Knotweed yet, but it\u2019s a very powerful antiviral and could be incredibly useful in this situation. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faystonforager.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tincture available from Marge Keough.<\/a><\/p><h5 style=\"font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 21.6px; font-weight: bold;\">14. Essential Oils<\/span><\/h5><p style=\"font-size: 18px; font-style: normal; font-weight: 400;\">Essential oils are potent and contain many antiviral properties. I\u2019ve been keeping a small bottle of Clove oil in my pocket; I dilute it with a little veggie oil and put a drop or two on the tip of my tongue if I\u2019m going out in the world and when I return home. Also, consider essential oils of Eucalyptus (has been shown to be effective against influenza viruses).<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--expands-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000001a0c0000000000000000_203081\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  title=\"Price, Shirley, Price, Len.
